North Africa is a region with immense potential in sustainable agriculture, driven by its strategic location and growing demand for innovative food production methods. Egypt and Morocco stand out as key players in this region, with vibrant agricultural sectors and ambitious plans to enhance food security and water management. These nations are actively working to modernize their agricultural practices, making North Africa an exciting focus region for collaboration with the Netherlands.
As North Africa’s largest agricultural producer, Egypt is critical to the region’s food supply and economy. The country boasts a diverse range of crops, from fruits and vegetables to grains and dates, grown in the fertile Nile Delta and beyond. However, challenges such as water scarcity and outdated technologies require innovative solutions.
Dutch Greenhouse Delta is spearheading efforts to support Egypt in transforming its agriculture sector through sustainable practices, water-smart technologies, and knowledge sharing. Together with Dutch partners, we aim to contribute to Egypt’s food security and agricultural resilience.
The Partners for International Business (PIB) program for Egypt, “Climate and Water Smart Protected Cultivation,” is a multi-year public-private partnership consisting of Dutch companies, educational institutes and government. The goal is to promote sustainable and efficient water use in horticulture while strengthening local food security and safety. As the program develops, Egyptian-Dutch collaboration for mid-tech and high-tech cultivation will play a vital role in modernizing Egypt’s agriculture sector, paving the way for a future of food security and innovation.
Morocco is a rising star in North Africa’s agricultural landscape, known for its diverse production of fruits, vegetables, and high-value crops like olives and citrus. With a growing focus on sustainability and efficient resource management, the country is investing in modernizing its agriculture sector.
Later in 2025, a new Partners for International Business (PIB) program will be launched in Morocco, aiming to strengthen Moroccan-Dutch collaboration in horticulture. This program will focus on sustainable cultivation methods, knowledge exchange, and innovative water management to address the country’s challenges and unlock its full potential in protected cultivation.
