Dutch trade mission to Egypt strengthens cooperation in sustainable agriculture

Mission activities included MoU signing and further development of the PIB programme on climate and water-smart protected cultivation

Recently, Dutch Greenhouse Delta participated in the Dutch trade mission to Egypt, organised by RVO and led by H.E. Sjoerd Sjoerdsma, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, together with Mr. Fokko Vijselaar (VNO-NCW).

The mission brought together representatives from government, knowledge institutions and the private sector to further strengthen cooperation between Egypt and the Netherlands in agriculture, horticulture, food systems, water management and sustainable economic development.

Opening of the programme took place at the Egypt–Netherlands Agricultural Partnership Conference in Cairo, attracting more than 600 Egyptian participants. In the presence of both ministers, several MoUs were signed. On behalf of Dutch Greenhouse Delta, we signed an MoU together with the Farm to Fork Alliance, focused on the role of the Dutch PIB consortium “Climate & Water Smart Protected Cultivation in Egypt” in supporting young Egyptian entrepreneurs and strengthening the agricultural value chain through more sustainable and resource-efficient production systems.

Throughout the programme, discussions focused on developments in Egypt’s agricultural sector and the increasing demand for solutions related to controlled environment agriculture (CEA), greenhouse technology, water efficiency, seed systems and knowledge development. Bilateral meetings and stakeholder dialogues further explored opportunities around food security, climate resilience, productivity improvement and supply chain development.

The final day included several field visits, providing insight into local production conditions, operational challenges and developments in logistics and food distribution. These visits highlighted both the opportunities in the Egyptian market and the importance of approaches that combine technology, knowledge transfer and local implementation.

Egypt continues to position itself as a strategic market for agri-food investments. Public-private collaboration frameworks such as the PIB programme play an important role in connecting Dutch expertise with local ambitions and supporting long-term sector development.

The mission once again demonstrated the value of international cooperation in accelerating innovation, strengthening food systems and creating sustainable business opportunities across the agricultural value chain.

Follow-up activities are already in motion, including an incoming Egyptian delegation to GreenTech Amsterdam in June and participation in Sahara Expo in Cairo later this year.
