Successful Activities Driving Sino-Dutch Horticulture

Successful Activities Driving Sino-Dutch Horticulture

Last week, Dutch horticulture made a strong impression during the first three activities of the NL Protected Agri Alliance (SMM-China). The Dutch delegation showcased the Netherlands’ leadership in Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) and fostered new Sino-Dutch collaborations.

The week began successfully with the 3rd China Facility Fruits and Vegetable Horti Industry Conference 2025. Mr. Koen Sizoo, Consul General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Shanghai, delivered the opening speech, highlighting Dutch innovation and setting the tone for strengthened collaboration in horticulture.

Strong Collective Presence at Asia Fresh 2025

At Asia Fresh, the Netherlands highlighted its expertise as a trusted partner in advancing modern, controlled growing systems. The joint NL Pavilion represented the full Dutch horticultural ecoystem, offering solutions across the entire value chain. From climate control and greenhouse management to sustainable production techniques.

Dutch companies demonstrated how innovative solutions can be co-developed with local partners to fit the Chinese context. This collaborative approach enables lasting, sustainable impact and creates opportunities for growers, investors, and policymakers to implement advanced horticultural systems tailored to local needs.

Roadshow Across Henan Province
The Dutch delegation then embarked on a roadshow through Henan province, visiting several cutting-edge horticultural projects. Erik Smidt, Agricultural Counsellor at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, also participated, providing valuable insights on Sino-Dutch collaboration and sustainable horticultural practices.

  • Lankao County Urban Horticulture Project: A 2.3-hectare high-tech greenhouse producing cherry tomatoes year-round, equipped with Dutch climate control systems and a geothermal heating system.
  • AoJite Bio Mushroom Company: One of Lankao County’s largest mushroom growers, using Dutch climate control systems and expertise to ensure stable production quality.
  • Qi County Greenhouse Project, Hebi City: A 10-hectare greenhouse producing high-quality cherry tomatoes. Heated with hot water from a nearby thermal power plant, the project reduces energy costs to one-third of standard greenhouse operations.

Dutch Horticultural Seminars

The week concluded with two major knowledge-sharing events:

  • Sino-Dutch Horticulture Industry Cooperation Conference

More than 170 attendees, including government officials and investors, explored collaboration opportunities and sustainable horticulture practices.

  • Dutch Horti Technology Seminar at the Annual Greenhouse Conference

Presentations on successful Dutch practices were met with strong positive feedback, emphasizing collaboration over competition.

Results and Follow-up

The outcomes are clear: Dutch horticultural expertise has strengthened its visibility in China, with follow-up meetings planned with Chinese partners, and invitations for GreenTech 2026 already underway, ensuring continued engagement in the region.

SMM China

The activities were proudly organized under the SMM program coordinated by the Dutch Embassy in Beijing, RVO and DGD. To strengthen the Dutch position in this dynamic market, the Approach of the NL Protected Agri Alliance China (SMM-China)  brings together expertise in horticulture, water, energy, and biodiversity in one powerful public-private partnership.
